Cocoa Pear Chips

Cocoa Pear Chips

Dehydrating fruit is a time-honored way of creating healthy sweet treats. These dried organic pear slices are dusted with ginger, cinnamon, sugar, and cocoa for a unique and crispy snack. After baking the pears, add any leftover spice mix to a cup of warm plant-based milk for an extra little treat.

Makes approximately 36 chips
3 organic pears, ripe but firm
3⁄4 teaspoon Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Organic Ground Ginger
3⁄4 teaspoon Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Organic Ground Cinnamon
3 tablespoons Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Organic Coconut Sugar
2 tablespoons Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Organic Cocoa Powder
  1. Preheat oven to 275°F. Prepare two baking sheets with racks to allow for air flow around the pear slices. If desired, you can line the sheets with parchment paper for easier clean up.
  2. Slice each pear in half lengthwise, remove the stem and slice pears into 1/8-inch-thick slices using a mandolin or very sharp knife. If the pears are too soft, increase to 1/4-inch-thick slices; the thicker the slices, the longer they will need to dehydrate. Once sliced remove any seeds.
  3. Mix the spices in a small bowl.
  4. Lay the pear slices on the racks and with your fingers or a small sieve sprinkle the slices liberally with the sugar and spice mixture. Flip all the slices and sprinkle the other side so both sides are well coated.
  5. Bake in the middle and top racks in the oven until almost dry (about 1½ hours), turning the slices over and rotating the baking sheets halfway through cooking time. Ensure that there is plenty of room for air to circulate around the cookie sheets.
  6. Cool on the rack and store in an airtight container for up to two days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
